This is the first American edition of a classic dog story. It is a glorious spellbinding tale. A brother and sister's dog has pups and they give the lone male to their friend Fritz who is too poor to buy a dog. The backdrop of story is on a border of two European counttries where the childrens' happiness is affected by burdens put upon their parents and where freedom is in peril. When Toby is lost, the three children look through heavily guarded woods and railway tunnels trying to find Toby. The book is in good condition and the binding is tight and square. The dustjacket is intact but does show wear at the edges. There is small chip out of the front cover. Irving's illustrations are beautiful and they carry the story along nicely. Church was a distinguished novelist and poet. Irving was a well known artict who did a lot of work in the theatre.
