Of George Stanhope (1660�1728) John Evelyn remarked: "This Mr Stanhop[e], is certainly one of the most accomplish[ed] preachers that in my life I ever heard, both for Matter, Eloquence, Action, Voice, Authority: & one of an excellent Conversation as I am told' (Evelyn, 5.223, quoted in DNB). This translation went through a number of editions. Octavo. [16], 300, 317-552, [8] pp., including the errata leaf and page of publisher's ads. Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked in modern sheep, gilt black calf spine label. Top forecorner of title-page torn, with loss of one letter. Contemporary ink annotations, correcting all the errors noted in the errata, a few marginal pencil marks from a later owner. Old ink annotation about Epictetus affixed to front pastedown. A good copy. First edition of this translation by the Dean of Canterbury. Wing E3153. Seller Inventory # 13832
