Light wear and fraying to the top of the spine ends. With the portrait frontispiece engraving of Thoreau after Rowse's crayon sketch, with protective tissue guard.Clean chocolate endpapers; clean and tight throughout. With some faint acid migration of Thoreau's image on the title page through the tissue guard. A scarce first edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and enhanced with a preliminary 33-page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
