Small discoloration to the bottom of the front board. No other defects noted. Years of service in teaching the theory of music has convinced the author of this book that there should be a simplified method of Harmony to meet the requirements of those who have musical sense and a desire to study the formation of chords and their progressions and resolutions, but who cannot avail themselves of the opportunities offered in a school of music under competent instructors. The editing of this book, therefore, has been undertaken with this end in view, and also to aid the teacher who desires quick results. Terms that would be more or less confusing to one with little or no technical knowledge of music have been studiously avoided, and the principles have been set forth in language such as any pupil can readily understand. It is customary for theorists to give many rules that are soon to be broken, and thus cause confusion in the mind of the pupil. In this book few rules are given, but, instead, principles are stated that are sufficiently flexible to be practical, and at the same time comprehensive enough to answer the purpose. No attempt has been made to carry the pupil beyond what would be necessary in four-part hymn writing, but after mastering what this book contains, it will not be difficult for the pupil to take up more advanced work, since the working harmonies are pretty generally discussed and illustrated herein.
