First edition. Mixed collection of sixteen short stories by the author of the Martin Hewitt series. Collects several mysteries, a Cunning Murrell story, a humorous tale of the rural Essex witch doctor and the power of suggestion which is not fantastic or supernatural, also "The Seller of Hate," a deal-with-the-Devil story, and "The Chamber of Light," a humorous ghost story of psychic investigator driving the poor spectres to distraction.
