A stated first edition of the novel by Mari Sandoz. This is the fictionalized story of John Jackson Cozad, a gambler who founded the town of Cozad, Nebraska and his son, Robert Henri. The latter grew up to be an accomplished painter, known especially for his portraiture of women. Mari Sandoz wrote many books on the history of the High Plains, beginning with her famous biography of her father, "Old Jules." --- In full beige cloth-covered boards with spine titling in brown. Jacket features an image of a hand of playing cards to front panel. --- With two prior owners' signatures to front endpapers, else a tightly-bound, attractive, sound copy. Dust jacket with chipping and small tears along edges, sunned spine but mostly intact and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; x, 333 pages.
