Item description from seller

First edition. Octavo. Decorative cloth. Near fine in modestly soiled and nicked, very good or better dust jacket. Romance novel set in South Africa. Stockley was born in London, but is usually identified as a South African author when she moved to the British colony of Rhodesia, and was twice married, first to Rhodesian police officer, Phillip George Watts Stockley, and later Colonel H. E. Pelham-Browne, one of the earliest European settlers of Rhodesia. She later returned to England, and began writing. Her first book, *Virginia of Rhodesians* (1904), was a collection of short stories that achieved international success. Later *Poppy, The Story of a South African Gir*' (1910), was considered controversial because of its frankness about marriage, morality, sex and depression. Much of her writing was centered on Colonial life in South Africa, and at the time of her death by suicide, several obituaries identified her as a South African writer. This title is uncommon in jacket.
