"In 1817, von Graefe first described his attempt to close soft palatal cleft, the operation having been performed in 1816. The closure in this case apparently failed; his techniques consisted essentialy of cauterizing the edges of the cleft velum with a tincture of cantharides to 'freshen' them, and then suturing them with interrupted twine threads. He modified this technique later and obtained a successful closure in 1820 by paring the cleft defect a "uranotome" knife. The free ends of the sutures were held to the cheeks with adhesive plasters, and were left there until they sloughed out." "Von Graefe's report of a successful closure of the palatal defect in 1820 soon raised a surgical storm, heard through Europe. Only one year before, in 1819, Philibert Roux of Paris reported his first successful closure of a similar defect in John Stephenson, a Canadian medical student. German colleagues of von Graefe and French supporters of Roux then charged each other with the crime of surgical plagiarism. It was suggested in the early 1820's that Roux knowingly took credit in 1819 for first devising a truly 'successful' closure of the soft palate, although a similar operation had been performed (unsuccessfully) 3 years earlier in 1816 by Graefe."
