This book, written by historians of the Army Security Agency, now unclassified, is the story of (1) the War Department's Code and Cipher Section, headed by William F. Friedman, and (2) the Cipher Bureau MI-8), headed by Herbert O. Yardley. The text describes the administration and problems of the Cipher Bureau (MI-8) in New York, as well as the cryptanalytic solutions accomplished by that organization (later to become known as the American Black Chamber). Why the Cipher Bureau (MI-8) ceased operations in 1929 is described in detail. Text includes an index.

Trade paperback. [3], 186 p. Footnotes. Index. This is number 22 in their Cryptographic Series. This material was prepared and written about 1946 by the Historical Section fo the then Army Security Agency. The U. S. Government provided the editon, through the National Archives, an unclassified or "sanatized" version of the cited "Historical Background". On occasion, "blank pages: and frequently censored 'gaps' occured in the text. In these cases, the editor made reference to other unclassified sources, and especilly to Yardley's The American Black Chamber, to fill in the gaps. Very good. No dust jacket as issued. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Seller Inventory # 62922
