London: T. Cadell, 1794. Tobias Smollet (1721-1771) was famed for his picaresque novels, but he intended his own "History of England" to be his major work. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of his continuation of David Hume's history: " A New Edition, with the Author's Last Corrections and Improvements" (Volume III only). Full leather binding; gilt ruling and decorations on the spine. Titling and numbering in gilt on black labels. Clean text; 339 pages. Contemporary signature on the Title Page. Shows rather heavy rubbing at the margins. The cover is splitting at the spine edges and there is a large chip at the head of the spine. The textblock is exceptional, bright and clear; Quercus would suggest a nice rebind would be in order to give it another two centuries of life. First Thus. Full-Leather. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
