(cgc) An important history on the rebellion that includes valuable accounts of incidents taken from participants and eye-witnesses. While opposed to the rebellion, Maxwell remained free from the partisanism found in many contemporary accounts and is straight forward in pointing out the faults and outrages on the British side. The Cruikshank illustrations depicting the rebels as ape-like and bestial, and have often been reproduced. They have falsely contributed to the idea that this is a partisan work.
