First edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 328; frontispiece, engraved folding map; contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards; extremities a little rubbed, several minor scratches; all else very good, sound, and clean. A first-hand account of the Taiping Rebellion, a massive civil war in China 1850-64, between the established Manchu-led Qing dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom under Hong Xiuquan who believed he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ. The rebellion had an enormous death toll exceeding 20 million, which is comparable to that of World War One, and was one of the deadliest wars in human history. Seller Inventory # 67876
