The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments, Together with the Apocrypha. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No jacket. Published by Merrifield and Cochran in 1812, it was the first Bible printed in Vermont. Original full calfskin binding. Spine label of maroon leather with Holy Bible in gilt lettering. (See seller s photos) Includes the rare foldout Map of Palestine and, opposite p. 805, one of the original full-page steel engravings- Jesus of Nazareth - commissioned for this edition. (See seller s photos) Front edges of covers and spine joints are scuffed. Corners are bumped with boards showing through slightly at two places. Binding is attached to the spine. The front end papers and the Map of Palestine show minor insect damage. None occurs anywhere else in the book. Text block is solid, unmarked, without perceptible creases. The front top and bottom corners of the first ten pages are worn. All pages are lightly foxed throughout with occasional heavier foxing on perhaps a total of 10 pages. All 964 original pages are present, followed by 14 unpaginated leaves containing an index and an alphabetical table. Page 961 is torn, and page 963 is missing a top portion, though missing pieces have been placed between the pages. Pages 957 to 960 containing engravings of Biblical figures have been removed. There are ink stains on the two next-to-last pages, and a signature of Riley Whitings, dated November 13, 1813 on the last page. This volume appears to be in better condition than most other versions currently available and is the only one with the Map of Palestine and one of the original illustrations. As such, this should prove attractive to collectors of early American Bibles and those who treasure items with unique Vermont provenance. (photos soon to be posted). Seller Inventory # 56
