A lengthy inscription is present on the front flyleaf by Edward C. Aswell, editor of this work and two other works by Thomas Wolfe, published posthumously after Wolfe's tragic death at 38 years old. The inscription reads: "To Geraldine Wheaton Norton from Mabel who requested me to autograph it, which I gladly do. All who knew and loved Tom will find in this, his last novel, the most convincing evidence that his genius was coming to its fullest maturity when Death so tragically claimed him. Edward C. Aswell, New York, Sept. 26, 1940". In this sequel to "The Web and the Rock", the story is continued of George Weber who searches for purpose and meaning, both within his own life and that in American society. Largely autobiographical, it is said that this novel represents Wolfe's most mature work. Bound in dark navy/black publisher's cloth with red and yellow accents on the cover and spine with debossed lettering. Deckled foredge and foot. viii, 743 pp. Dust jacket is in yellow and black with black, red and white lettering. A black and white photograph and short bio of Thomas Wolfe is present on the back DJ cover. Protected by a mylar cover. Laid in is a bookmark from the Thomas Wolfe Memorial in Asheville, North Carolina. Inner hinge is cracked at the title page and at the gutter between pages 742 and 743, yet boards are still affixed and the binding is sound. Leaf 574/575 had a strip torn away. Some one in the past taped it back, but tape residue is still there. It is now professionally attached. Leaves have lightly toned with only occasional discoloration, predominantly within endpapers. One inch piece at the edge is missing of the leaf bearing pages 753 and 754, but the piece is still present, showing vintage tape marks on both pieces. Unmarked except for Edward C. Aswell's inscription. Dust jacket is VG with very light wear, but it is price clipped. Still quite readable with care. A very special, very rare collector's copy of this great work from Thomas Wolfe.
