It could easily be argued that continental philosophy would have fallen into some kind of darkness without Alexander Kojeve's Introduction a la Lecture de Hegel. Attended by some of the most luminary minds of not just the 20th century, but of all time - think Jacques Lacan, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Raymond Queneau - his lectures served as the foundation for what would later come to be known as the "French Hegel." This was a reading of Hegel that managed to merge both the idealist strands that preceded his work - in Kant and Fichte -- and the materialist strands that came after it - Marx and his cohort. Kojeve would famously deliver these lectures by translating the German Phenomenology of Spirit into French on the fly, delivering minimal commentary.Divided up into 7 sections, this work covers the courses given by Kojeve in Paris from 1933-1939. In original publisher's ivory wraps with black and red text to front cover, back cover, and spine. Remarkably minimal tear to edges. With a previous owner's name ("P. Grojeanne") stamped blue ink to the upper right corner of the title page. Otherwise, this is a near fine copy - tight, bright and clean - and still in the original glassine wrap.
