259 pages; Publisher's dark maroon ribbed cloth, spine and front cover decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, floral pattern printed pale brown endpapers. The rear cover has moderate dampstains across the top, there are small defects to the rear endpapers, and the spine has portions of the cloth which have lost their sizing and surface sheen. The front cover and the text block are in very good condition, tight and clean. Frontispiece portrait of the author; wood-engraved portraits of the subjects in the text. The author had served in the Confederate Army during the late unpleasantness between the States, as a Captain -- adjutant-general of General George B. Cosby's Brigade. He also was a war correspondent for a Richmond newspaper. In 1871, he married Confederate General Humphrey Marshall's daughter, Nelly Nichol Marshall (born in Louisville, Kentucky, 8 May 1845; died in Washington, D.C., 19 April 1898). She, too, was an author. In addition to numerous poems and many magazine articles, she published novels entitled: Eleanor Morton, or Life in Dixie (New York, 1865), Sodom Apples (1866), Fireside Gleanings (Chicago, 1866), As by Fire (New York, 1869), Wearing the Cross (Cincinnati, 1868), Passion, or Bartered and Sold (Louisville, 1876), and A Criminal through Love (1882).
