Pen and ink on paper, 6 2/3 x 4 3/4 inches (image), 9 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches (sheet). Artist's original ink crop marks in corners, traces of graphite guide lines in margins. Very minor smuging in top and right margins, else fine. Original art for Edward Gorey's eighth Christmas card commissioned by George Bixby for Ampersand Books and the Albondocani Press for 1988. The image shows a pair of lizards in full evening dress standing outside before a stone wall and garden urns and holding coupes of champagne. Their toast has either just finished or just been interrupted as they gaze heavenward at a bright heavenly body with a long tail, captioned in French as the "Star in the East" of the Nativity story. Between 1975 and 1990, Edward Gorey drew ten Christmas cards for Ampersand/Albondocani, which were printed for the private use of himself and Bixby as holiday greetings (see Toledano, p. 158). From the collection of George Bixby. Seller Inventory # 1096
