8vo. First impression thus. This reset edition first published in 2002. Twelfth impression of that reset edition. The Lord of the Rings first published 1954-5. Original quarter maroon hardcovers, stamped in red and gold foil on grey boards, and housed in a matching slipcase. Yellow silk marker ribbon. Full-colour plate section featuring three pages from the Book of Mazarbul, created by J. R. R. Tolkien, with two additional Hobbit family trees by him. It includes the original red and black maps drawn by Christopher Tolkien, two of which appear as fold-out sheets. Bought in the original shrink-wrap which has been removed in order to catalogue the book. As new. This edition, published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of The Fellowship of the Ring, also includes the appendices and a revised and updated index. Hardcover. Three Volumes, slipcased, comprising 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'. Octavo, original black cloth stamped in gold on spine panels, front panels with the 'ring and eye' design in copper and gold (Fellowship), green and gold (Towers) and purple and gold (Return), cream endpapers, top page edges stained orange (copper) (Fellowship), green (Towers) and purple (Return); folding maps at rear of each volume. 423 + 352 + 440 pp. These are the issue that was distributed by the Book of the Month Club, with unpriced dust jackets and small blindstamped dots at the lower edge of the rear panels. A few minor flaws (small knocks to the box, a few small stains); but a near fine set in near fine dust jackets, in a near fine example of the printed paper-covered slipcase. There are no previous ownership markings. A very nice set in near fine condition. The text follows that of the final revisions for the Second Edition, revised by Tolkien in 1966. Black spines with yellow, pink, and purple and yellow titling to heads of spines. Housed in a Good plus condition black slipcase with paper label, has bumping to corners, and wear to extremities. Dust jacket prices uncut, have significant fading to spines, tears to spine head/tails, and wear to extremities. Volume 1 dust jacket has a light stain to the spine. Volume 1 and 3 dust jackets have tears to the top fore corners. Boards have mild shelving wear. Volumes 1 and 3 have discoloration to spine ends. Textblocks have general shelving wear to edges. Tipped in foldout maps to rear free end pages of all textblock. "The Fellowship of the Ring" states fourth printing. "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" state third printings.
