"Landmarks" by E. V. Lucas is a series of short pieces, obviously fictional which serve to illuminate various aspects of a man's life. The pieces all revolve around a character named Rudd, and we follow him through a series of discoveries. Each discovery, or "Landmark" in his life is the subject of a chapter. Together they form a sort of episodic 'bildungsroman'. It is all very charming; Lucas, who was raised a Quaker, had a slightly different perspective than many of the writers of his day, and we are made aware of a sort of quiet wisdom in his perspective. Edward Verrall Lucas, (1868 1938) was a well-regarded English humorist, essayist, editor and general man of letters. He was prolific - but quite talented. EXTERIOR - Compression and mild abrasion to spine extremities - spine has modest surface rub and color is darkened but gilt is only slightly dulled - still displays nicely. Boards display mild wear, including light surface rub and a few scattered, small spots - Basically clean and presentable with gilt lettering and embellishment displaying brightly. Text-block edges are toned but clean. BINDING - The text block is ever so slightly shaken - the book has obviously been read and the leaves open widely - none are detached or loose. INTERIOR - End-papers lightly toned and the paper over the rear hinge had been split but there is evidence of mending thereto - else clean and presentable with but modest signs of use ( a few scattered spots or light smudges, small corner creases, etc the original owner's dated signature in ink displays PROMINENTLY on the title page (William Hills , dated Dec. 1914).
