Near-contemporary morocco, rebacked retaining existing spine, gilt frames to boards and spine, which has fragments of a hand-lettered paper title panel, ties lacking, corners of boards and hinges mended, all edges gilt. A few minor stains to boards, later bookplate of Edouard Fremy to front pastedown. Early annotation (shelf mark) in small early hand to front free endpaper. Ruled throughout in red. Moderate toning, light soiling to title page and a few other leaves. A handsome copy. $1,500. * First edition. One of the first books on the subject, and one of the most influential, Legatus is a detailed treatise on the duties and functions of ambassadors. (It reached its fifth and final edition in 1645.) An Italian by birth, Pasquale worked for the French court. By the time he had written this book, he had served Henry III as an envoy in Poland and had been part of a successful mission to the court of Elizabeth I on behalf of Henri IV. Fremy [1843-1904] was a French diplomat who served as secretaire de legation, among other positions, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
