Calhoun (1782-1850), South Carolina-born statesman and political philosopher; graduate of Yale (1804), elected to the South Carolina legislature in 1808 and to the US Congress in 1810; supporter of the War of 1812 (even after the Treaty of Ghent); Secretary of War under James Monroe (1817-25) and noted for his improvements in army organization; elected US Vice President (1824, 1828) but soon alienated from Andrew Jackson over the nullification issue; served for a time as Secretary of State (under John Tyler); of further note for his positions on slavery and the Mexican War.2 Folding Tables / Plates.
