First edition, variant issue, priority unknown with 1891 copyright date and with no date on the title page, and with frontispiece portrait of the author Octavo. Both hinges are lightly cracked due to delicate floral paper endpapers which are vulnerable to such flaws, lower spine has slight fraying on one spot, else a very good copy. Long thought to have been written by an African-American author, recent scholarship has concluded that the author is not African-American.
