The first book in the series, Conquest and Conscience: the 1840s, also written by Dr. Robert Sobel, was published a year ago. The richness of America's historical landscape is itself justification for renewed exploration. Yet the significant purpose of this series is to delineate the decade-by-decade progression of American business -- within the broader framework of social and political events, combining to shape a proud though occasionally flawed heritage. Although we are often told that history does not repeat itself, the frequent remarkable parallels between past and present tempt us to believe otherwise. History, to be sure, cannot repeat itself, just as no moment, nor any other measure of time can pass more than once. However, the nation's past mistakes can be repeated; its successes can be redoubled; and in times of crisis, its spirit can be revitalized.
