First edition, 8vo, pp. xii, 295, [1], 12; original blue cloth, gilt title on spine, lower map endpaper; spine a touch toned and cocked, contemporary ownership signature of E. C. Hartley, near fine. Ossendowski was a Polish chemist, traveler, and likely spy. He spent his early career as an expert on the natural resources of Eastern Russia, became active in the counter-revolution, escaped a death sentence, and became an associate of the warlord Roman von Ungern-Sternberg. After the Baron's fall, he moved briefly to the US, and then to Poland, where he continued to teach, and was attached to the Polish government as an advisor. Seller Inventory # 67489
