First Edition, First Issue complete in two volumes of this novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Issue points include the publisher's catalogue titles at the end of volume 1 dated February 1860, the preface in volume 1 set before the contents, no conclusion in volume 2 and the word "for" on page 225 of volume 1. Both volumes are brown cloth with gilt titles. Volume 1 is in Very Good to Good condition with rubbed spots on the top corners of the fore edge on both covers and edge wear at the top and bottom of the spine. Volume 2 is in Good condition with a previous owner name on the front endpaper (with a March 1860 date) a 1" chip on the back edge at the top of the spine and a 1/2" chip on the fore edge at the bottom of the spine.
