About this title
Traces the life of the noted painter, from his birth in Russia to his death in France, with an emphasis on his Jewish background
From School Library Journal:Grade 8 Up-- It's useful to have stories of artists such as Chagall, who died a rich man, to offset the romantic myths of the starving bohemian. Bober tells his story in a straight birth-to-death line, a journey that goes through Europe and America as persecution of the Jews and then success goad him to frequent moves. She emphasizes his personal life, and offers her own interpretations of the artist's state of mind. The text deals with the man in a manner that matches his paintings, e.g., Chagall seems to be floating in a world of his own creation surrounded by a cast of those whose function seems basically to care for him. Rosenberry's few black-and-white vignette and full-page illustrations are competently drawn as decorative notes but do not amplify the narrative. Four high-quality, full-color reproductions are also included. --Kenneth Marantz, Art Education Department, Ohio State University, Columbus
