First American edition. Printed by J. & J. Harper. Octavo. 360pp. Early quarter black leather and marbled paper boards, gilt spine, cream endpapers. Small owner s bookplate on front pastedown and name in ink on front free endpaper (dated 1896). Both boards are rubbed and detached, else very good with moderate toning and foxing. The scarce American edition. No copies in *OCLC*.
