During Reconstruction, white plantation owners imported Chinese sharecroppers in the hope of replacing their black laborers. Classed with "black" status, the Chinese saved their monies and soon became owners of small grocery stores. Loewen details their astounding transition from poor and oppressed to independent and successful. An uncommon study of race relationships in the Deep South by celebrated and prolific American sociologist, historian, and author James W. Loewen; this being his first book.
