Hardy's largest collection of verse, comprising 159 poems, focuses primarily on the death of his first wife and the reimagining of their past romance, with the exception of his war poems. Few of these works appeared in periodicals, as Hardy rarely allowed such personal poems to be published in magazines. A major figure of Victorian literature, Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life. This emotionally introspective collection is regarded as some of his finest late-career work.
