Synopsis:

An account of ongoing efforts to recover the nineteenth-century wreck of the USS Monitor features more than one hundred photographs, paintings, and technical plans, as well as never before published letters from a common Civil War sailor who served aboard the famous battleship.

About the Author: The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, is the official repository for Monitor artifacts recovered from the wreck site in the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. The Museum is responsible for the complex task of conserving these historic objects, and for exhibiting and interpreting them for the public. The letters of Monitor sailor George S. Geer, donated to The Mariners' Museum by the Carl Espy family, are part of the Museum's extensive holdings of documents, artworks, and artifacts related to the Civil War. Congress has designated The Mariners' Museum, along with a sister institution in New York City, an American National Maritime Museum.
