Tips of corners lightly bumped, very light tanning at tips of spine, colophon page has offset browning (from limitation slip), else a near fine copy, with text and plates fresh and bright, in publisher's unprinted glassine dust wrapper. The glassine is tanned and lightly dust soiled, thin chip at base of spine and on one corner, else near fine. Velin du Marais' issue, limited to 30 numbered copies (this being number "6") of a total edition of 1050 numbered copies. Uncommon in any issue [OCLC locates only seven worldwide holdings for this title, with no indication of the issue/limitation. Jean Lorrain (1855-1906), born Paul Duval, was a French poet and novelist of the Symbolist school. Illustrator Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971), born in Russia, was an artist, graphic designer, art director, photographer, and teacher. He left Russia in 1920 and settled in Paris. He eventually became a set painter for the Ballet Russe (which was directed by Diaghilev) and later worked on fabric designs and layouts for 'Arts et Métiers Graphiques' (an avant garde periodical of the graphic arts, published by French typefounders Deberny and Peignot). Brodovitch won the influential first prize in a poster competition for the Bal Banal, resulting in further opportunities to design posters for some of the largest French companies, and he also served as art director for two leading Parisian department stores. He came to the United States in 1930, first in Philadelphia and then New York. He established a design laboratory at the New School, and began his career at Harper's Bazaar in 1934, where he influenced American design and print photography for decades.; issued as Vol. 25 in the series "Les Beaux Romans"]. .
