Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Unclipped dust jacket protected by archival mylar. Williams (1874-1922) was considered the greatest Black entertainer of his time. His is a troubled history - a brilliant comic, groundbreaking as one of the first Black men to have a leading role in a film, in 1914, a best-selling recording artist, and the first Black American to have a funeral service held at the all-white Masonic Lodge. Even so, he was a performer of his time, wearing black face and playing on the Vaudeville circuit where he was the star attraction but was not allowed to have top billing. This book is the first full-length biography of the great Bert Williams, the man W.C. Fields called "the funniest man I ever saw, and the saddest man I ever knew.". Seller Inventory # 003865
