Large octavo, 5 volumes, complete as published (two volumes of Austen's letters were issued nearly a decade later, and are sometimes offered together with this set). One of 1,000 limited sets, 950 of which were offered for sale. An exceptionally beautiful example of this notoriously fragile set, bound in the publisher's marbled boards with blue-ish cloth spines and printed spine labels; evocative of a Regency-period publisher's binding. Spines gently and evenly sunned, but a fine set, with handsome 20th century bookplates to each front paste-down. In the rare original dust jackets, somewhat darkened on the spines, and some with small stains and edge chips, but still at least very good. Aside form the many sets which were quickly bound up in leather, one surmises that surviving sets in the publisher's binding often had their jackets thrown away, as the bindings are more attractive. Each volume contains a bound-in replacement spine label at the rear, as issed. A superior, un-fooled-around-with example. Seller Inventory # 12518
