First edition of Hood's first book, 12mo, pp. vi, [2], 136; original brown paper-covered boards, printed paper label on spine; slight cracking along the hinges and at the spine extremities, but on the whole a very good, sound copy. Hood (1799-1845) was always in poor health and died young. His first volume Odes and addresses to great people was written in conjunction with his brother-in-law John Hamilton Reynolds, a friend of John Keats. Coleridge wrote to Lamb averring that the book must be the latter's work. Seller Inventory # 66775

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Delving into the realm of British society, this book unfolds as a witty panorama of 19th-century England through the incisive pen of the author. With a keen eye for the absurd and an understanding of human nature, the writer takes aim at the foibles and eccentricities of the era. From celebrated figures like Graham, the aeronaut, to the humblest washerwoman, each character becomes a vehicle for social commentary, revealing the quirks and hypocrisies that define their time. In its critique of Victorian society, the book mirrors the works of Dickens and Thackeray, capturing the spirit of an age marked by both progress and absurdity. The author's satirical lens exposes the pretensions of the upper classes, the social injustices faced by the poor, and the paradoxical nature of a society obsessed with both innovation and tradition. Through a kaleidoscopic array of poetic forms, from elegant odes to playful addresses, this book invites readers to witness the human comedy of 19th-century England, offering a timeless reflection on the follies and virtues of society.
