A volume of advice on etiquette, hygiene, religious practice and economy for young women, addressed particularly to the factory girls (i.e., "operatives") in the New England mills. An unexpectedly fascinating work that advocates for women's economic independence, free from the sphere of matrimony, in ways uncustomary in advice literature of the period. On the topic of marriage, for example, Porter states plainly: "Let matters of love and matrimony have the least attention possible.I have.no pleasure in the many jokes we hear about "old maids;" and take this occasion to brand them as altogether unjust and impolite." Regarding personal economy, he provides a useful, brief lesson in the accumulation of capital: ".deposit your money in the savings bank.a little laid up monthly in this way, will soon make you independent. Many girls have taken this course and are well off.of the two thousand depositors in the Lowell Savings Bank, about one half are factory girls; the amount of whose funds, now on interest, is estimated at one hundred thousand dollars." How many New England working women heeded Porter's directions and became truly independent is difficult to say, but such advice strikes us as good evidence to support the view that the factory towns of New England were an important seed-bed for what would evolve into the full-fledged movement for women's rights after the Civil War. Not an especially uncommon book, but consistently underestimated by cataloguers; apparently not well-known or much discussed in the historical literature of the period (a search of JSTOR, for example, returns no mentions of the title across disciplines).
