Octavo: xx, 212, 8[adverts)]pp., one plate and many text illustrations. End papers a little browned, but otherwise a very good copy in original cloth. Scarce first English edition of Wegener's hypothesis of continental drift which was highly controversial and not widely accepted until the 1960s, when numerous discoveries such as palaeomagnetism provided strong support for continental drift, and thereby a substantial basis for today's model of plate tectonics. He was not the first to suggest that the continents had once been connected, but he was the first to present extensive evidence from several fields. Seller Inventory # GE018
