Vol I shows weakening of hinge at ffep; pp 320-350 (approx) loosening/slightly extending from textblock; pencil signature and darkening from former bookmark to verso half-title page, and recto frontispiece. Vol II shows two noticeable dark spots to fore-edge; hinges weakening at both endpapers, with p. 647 to rear free endpaper (rfep) loose; tipped in Lee surrender foldout shows several closed tears from handling; former owner signature to recto frontispiece. Among the first volumes published by Mark Twain, in collaboration with his nephew-in-law (Charles L. Webster), Grant s memoirs are considered among the finest if not the finest by a U.S. president. This two-volume set is a quite nice, collectible example. We personally inspect every book we offer. Seller Inventory # 1968
