Large octavo. xxxi, [1], 576 pp., frontis, illus. First edition. As issued, in maroon cloth with gilt decorations on the spine and front cover; top edge gilt. Cloth and gilt stamping are remarkably bright; very minor soiling to the binding; both boards are a bit bowed; a solid copy that is clean throughout but for small dampstain to the lower inner margin of the endpaper (visibile nowhere else in the contents). In their 1979 catalogue, the Dailey's call this "the greatest work ever published on the coca plant and the history of its use by the Incas and their descendants. Research on the active principle, cocaine, is documented from its isolation in 1859 to the end of the 19th century" Phantastica 194. Contains a bibliography of 500 items as well as very detailed index.
