Henry Hawley Smart (1833-193) English army officer, son of George Smart and his wife Katherine,daughter of Sir Joseph Henry Hawley a wealthy racehorse owner and bibliophile. Losses on the turf spurred Smart into becoming a novelist writing 38 books. They have been described as novels of society, military life, racing and hunting drawn from his detailed knowledge of them.
