Pre-publication material. Photographs by Peter Magubane. Introduction by Nadine Gordimer. A small but engaging collection of material, consisting of four gelatin silver photographic prints, each measuring 5" x 7"; five publisher's copy negatives, each measuring 4" x 5"; a 10-page photocopied draft of the introduction by Nadine Gordimer (titled "A Single Photograph, A Thousand Words"); two folded and stapled sheets making eight sample pages (printing six photographs and no text); the material is laid into a proof cover printed on glossy card stock. All in fine condition. The gelatin silver prints include an image of Nadine Gordimer hugging a Black South African woman (captioned on verso "Women of South Africa"), two versions of the cover image (one with text), and a powerful image of South Africans grieving over a coffin. The negatives include an alternate cover design utilizing the image of grieving South Africans, a full-frame negative of that image, the aforementioned image of Nadine Gordimer, as well as two images presumably published in the book (one is shown in the printed sample pages). The corner-stapled introduction has a few small photocopied corrections and a pencil inscription that reads "This is really fabulous. I've sent it to Shawn for the reps. K." Peter Magubane was an award-winning Black South African photographer and anti-apartheid activist, who served as the personal photographer of President Nelson Mandela. Nadine Gordimer was a Nobel Prize-winning South African writer and political activist. (N.B. The book's text was written by South African journalist Carol Lazar, although none of her work is present in this collection of material.) An interesting pre-production grouping including work by two significant South Africans.
