Giovanni Francesco Aggravi's Protolume Chimico echeggiante di condupplicati paraphasia (1682) is a rare and little known work of late 17th-century Italian alchemical and pharmaceutical literature. Published in Venice by Albondio Menafoglio, it presents a synthesis of spagyric medicine, the use of balsamic remedies, and theoretical explorations of chemical processes in medical applications. Aggravi's work fits within the tradition of spagyria, a Paracelsian approach to medicine that sought to extract the essential healing properties of substances through alchemical processes. By the 1680s, European alchemy was undergoing a transformation, shifting from traditional mystical pursuits toward a more practical and medicinal chemistry led by Paracelsus. Aggravi s book appears is part of this transition, exploring balsamici remedij (balsamic or resinous medicines), which were of increasing importance in iatrochemical (medical chemistry) treatments.
