18 x 11 cm. x 194pp. 12mo. Bound into 1/4 leather boards, tooled spine. Illustrated with 24 woodcuts. Lacking the frontispiece map/half title page. The front cover is nearly completely detached and would benefit from some repairs. A few notations from previous owner: a translation of the Thucydides quote on the title page, notes written on page 190 covering most of the blank space, and a faint ownership inscription dated 1827 on front paste-down. Rare work. Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721) was marooned on Juan Fernandez Island off the coast of Chili from 1705 - 1709. He was eventually rescued by the crew of "The Duke" Captained by Woodes Rogers who published an account of Selkirk in his 1712 "A Cruising Voyage Round the World". Selkirk was the inspiration for Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe. (ODNB) ESTC T99983.
