In the foregoing passages of this history mention now and again occurs of one Maximo Rodriguez, a youth of Spanish nationality, who having served with particular credit as a foot-soldier or marine in the frigate Aguila throughout her voyage to Tahiti and back, in 1772-3, was selected by the Viceroy of Peru to return in the quality of Interpreter with the expedition which his Excellency subsequently dispatched in the same vessel to the same destination. His diary, contained herein, is for the most part a document of simple domestic interests; but it retains historical value, unique of its kind, though its importance was much greater at the time it was written, when the voyages of Captains Cook, Wallis and Bougainville had scarcely yet come to light. Condition: Corners bumped, unread with many pages uncut, closed tear to page xlix else a very good copy.
