Octavo. 238 pp., frontis. First edition, one of only 25 copies. This an ex-library copy with periodic blindstamps to the top corner. Rebound in modern flexible boards with muslin spine and printed paper label; but for the library stamps, an ink-stamped number, and a penciled author's name on the title page, the copy is clean. Extremely rare, Robert Krick writes in his introduction to a recent edition of the work issued by University of Alabama Press (2010) that descendants of McClendon have remarked that this first edition was printed in an edition of only 25 copies for family and friends. It's rarity in commerce and in institutions holdings (OCLC identifies little better than half a dozen copie) supports this. Keith Bohannon in his introduction to this same edition above, writes of the unfortunate side effect of the rarity, that until now, Recollections has had limited usage by historians given access was so difficult. He writes, "This is unfortunate given the memoir's vivid accounts of pivotal Civil War battles and campaigns. Recollections is also notable for its honesty and description of grim scenes often avoided in memoirs, including the sight of denuded corpses at Antietam and the wrath of the author and his comrades when facing United States Colored Troops in battle for the first time in the summer of 1864. McClendon's account of the final battles and marches of Lee's Army is especially significant given the relative paucity of Confederate sources on that period" (p. xv-xvi). Rarely seen copy of an important Civil War memoir. Dornbusch II, 50. Seller Inventory # 9210
