A fourth volume Hochasien III. Ostturkestan und Umgebungen (1880) was published 8 years after the third, and is not included here. Based on the results of the scientific mission carried out by Hermann, Adolph and Robert von Schlagintweit in the years 1854-1858. Schlagintweit (1826-1882) studied in Munich and Berlin, made several scientific trips to the Alps (1846-48, 1851) as well as to England and Scotland (1851) and qualified as a professor in geography at the University of Berlin in 1851. From 1854 to 1857, Schlagintweit traveled through India and Central Asia on behalf of the East India Company and with the support of the Prussian government together with his brothers Adolf and Robert and reported on the results of these expeditions in several extensive works, including this: Travels in India and High Asia, 4 vols., 1869-80. "Bhutan was visited in Jan. 1856, and Sikkim in 1858 from April to August. In Feb. 1857 Hermann visited Kathmandu, and his two brothers travelled to Almora and Milam in the Garhwal; thence they entered into Tibet from Milam. After their return from Tibet, Adolph visited alone Tibet again. In 1855 Adolph and Hermann reached at the height of 6780m. of Ibi Gamin (Kamet). But unfortunately Robert was murdered by bandits at Kashgar on his way alone in 1857, after crossing the Karakoram and the Kuen-luen" (Yakushi). Yakushi S-148.
