An unbiased account of the war, from 94 letters & journals sent by Baurmeister to his superior, the Minister of State of Hesse-Cassel, forming a nearly continuous narrative from September 2, 1776, to April 23, 1784. Baurmeister served as a general staff officer under Hessian commanders von Heister, von Knyphausen, von Lossberg, and for a time as aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Clinton. As he was narrating events to a reader far removed from the conflict, he includes his observations on British laxity & American factionalism with unusual neutrality, incorporating reports of events as they reached him in addition to his own observations. A unique & important view of the war. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured.
