The Authoress'. ** Matthew Piers Watt Boulton 1820 - 1894, the philosopher, scientist and inventor, came from a distinguished engineering family whose enormous success had led to the purchase of the outstanding estate of Great Tew Park in the Cotswolds. Boulton's father and grandfather, pioneering figures in the Industrial Revolution, had been in partnership with James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine. The present Boulton (named after James Watt) was himself notable for his work on engines and on early aeronautics, particularly his invention of the aileron, a key feature of all flying machines from pioneering times to today. He was also a classicist and a member of the Metaphysical Society. He wrote many scientific and aeronautical papers, as well as verse translations of Homer 1875, Virgil 1877, and the German poet Heine 1880. Perhaps it is this latter volume to which Mme de Sanctis refers in her inscription. The Boultons' library at Great Tew was sold at auction in 1987. **** To order this book, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
