Sq.8vo, c.pp168 t.e.g., slight wear, excellent bright attractive copy. ** With decorative initials + vignettes + 40 full-page plates after Kaulbach's celebrated illustrations. *** The 2nd Edition - but the first appearance of the useful 4pp Preface discussing the various historical editions of Reynard The Fox. *** Kaulbach's delightful anthropomorphic work originally illustrated Goethe's 1845 Reineke Fuchs : the illustrations 'ingeniously catch the mood of animal satire' [Harthan : Illustrated Book]. *** See NUC listing 1 copy only of the 1st Madame de Sanctis Edition 1884, which was issued without the Preface. *** And see NUC noting 3 copies only of this 2nd Edition. This 2nd Edition not in the BL, which lists the 1st Edition only. Neither edition held in CUL. *** The flourished inscription is to 'M. P. W. Boulton Esq. with many thanks for his interesting volume. The Authoress'. ** Matthew Piers Watt Boulton 1820 - 1894, the philosopher, scientist and inventor, came from a distinguished engineering family whose enormous success had led to the purchase of the outstanding estate of Great Tew Park in the Cotswolds. Boulton's father and grandfather, pioneering figures in the Industrial Revolution, had been in partnership with James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine. The present Boulton (named after James Watt) was himself notable for his work on engines and on early aeronautics, particularly his invention of the aileron, a key feature of all flying machines from pioneering times to today. He was also a classicist and a member of the Metaphysical Society. He wrote many scientific and aeronautical papers, as well as verse translations of Homer 1875, Virgil 1877, and the German poet Heine 1880. Perhaps it is this latter volume to which Mme de Sanctis refers in her inscription. The Boultons' library at Great Tew was sold at auction in 1987. **** To order this book, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
