First American edition, 8vo, pp. ix, [1], 391, [1]; frontispiece portrait, color folding map, 45 illustrations from photographs on 38 plates; original blue decorated cloth, lettered in gilt, t.e.g; a very good, clean, and sound copy. Early inscription on front free endpaper to "Robert Packer Rathbun, from Mother." Bates (1883-1915) was an American engineer and politician from New York who died on the Lusitania.
