About this Item
First edition of this Caldecott Honor book, the story of a little orphaned fish who demonstrates that there is power in numbers. Leo Leonni's colorful, dynamic children's books are defined by his use of collage and stamping for his illustrations. Though he spent the bulk of his career as art director for advertisements and periodicals including FORTUNE, it was in picture books that he found "the key to unlocking decades of personal fears, joys, insecurities and loves" through simple metaphor (NEW YORK TIMES). Leonni's love for the medium translated into critical success, earning him four Caldecott Honors and the adoration of many young readers. SWIMMY emphasizes the importance of community in the face of threats, and is one of Lionni's most beloved titles. It earned a 1964 Caldecott Honor, and a lasting place in the history of the US picture book. 11'' x 8.75''. Original color pictorial boards. Original unclipped ($3.50) color pictorial dust jacket. Blue endpapers with a sea pattern. [16] leaves. Small owner name to gutter of front pastedown. Jacket with light edgewear, some small spots of toning and soil, a couple short closed tears. Binding with a bit of bumping to spine ends, mild toning to upper edge. Shows nicely. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket. Seller Inventory # 22012
