First edition thus, a condensed version of the sixth edition of 1871 with "much new matter. introduced" (stated "Student's Edition" on spine). Small octavo. xvi, 17-455pp. Forest green cloth ruled in blind with spine gilt. Owner blindstamp ("Edmund C. Evans") on two early leaves. Spine slightly darkened with a bit of loss at the spine ends and a short split at the base, bottom corner of page edges with a light stain barely affecting the margins of just a few leaves, first couple of pages with the occasional foxed spot, very good and sound. The first full edition was published in 1866. Former owner Edmund C. Evans is likely the Pennsylvania architect, peace advocate, and descendent of Rowland Ellis, founder of Bryn Mawr.
